The Deep End (2001) [trailer] - Is a dramatic thriller starring Tilda Swinton. In a way it has the essence of a Lifetime Original Movie only with far better casting.
Though the story is centered on Swinton’s character the main plot involves her eighteen-year-old son, played by Jonathan Tucker. He’s where the gay comes in. He’s been hiding the fact that he has an older male lover in the city. After a quick turn of events this mystery man ends up dead and she’s the one to find the body. Assuming her son caused this she chooses to cover it up as best she can.
Why I think this is a great LGBT film is because though it does involved slight clip of sex and it does become a vital part of the film it is not throughout. The main story is a mother trying to protect her son and her family from a potential threat. Its very down-to-earth and realistic. Fun fact: Jonathan Tucker actually had to wait til he turned eighteen in order to film the sex scene (even though its just a few seconds). Another is that the film is based on a novel of the same name where the son was originally her daughter instead, the directors took creative license in changing it.
If you’re looking for an intense thriller-esque drama involving gay characters than this is a definite must-see.
